Intense Points Race Continues As Bourgoine and Hammar Sweep

In Article, Unity Raceway by admin

The Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour competed in a double header this past weekend.  With just four races left in the season, the point’s battle was tight at the top of the standings.  Ryan Hammar held just a slim seven point advantage over Matt Bourgoine going into the races.  That wasn’t the only tight point’s battle though, as many spots are still undecided with four races remaining.

The first event was being held at Oxford Plains Speedway on Friday night in front of a great crowd at the famous 3/8th mile track.  After a good finish in his heat race, Matt Bourgoine started from the pole with John Peters on his outside.  Ryan Hammar was the only driver that was present from the top three at the last event at Star Speedway and had to start from the rear of the field.  At the start, Bourgoine got away from Peters as he had to fend off the 70 of Tylar Braunschweig.  Meanwhile making his way from the tenth spot was the 399 of Bob Weymouth as he got into the top five before the races halfway point.  Meanwhile, Hammar was making a charge from the rear of the field when his motor dropped a cylinder, as he had to coast the rest of the race.  Peters was starting to make a charge at Bourgoine before a caution flew with ten laps to go for a spin from the 96 of Wyatt Alexander after running hard with the 33 of Alan Smith.  On the restart, Bourgoine was able to get away from the battle for second and score his second Nelcar win of the season!  Peters made a last lap pass on Braunschweig to get the second spot while Weymouth and the 81 of Dan Winter rounded out the top five.  Ryan Hammar and John Peters were credited with the heat wins.

On Sunday the Tour headed north to Maine’s Toughest Track at Unity Raceway.  The track has been reopened by Jere Humphrey with improvements to one of the oldest tracks in the state of Maine and certainly the roughest and toughest, always handing a challenge to the Legends Car drivers.  The race started with Ryan Hammar on the pole with Evan Beaulieu, who had scored his first win in a Super Late Model the night before at Beech Ridge, on the outside of the front row after they both won their heat races.  Hammar got the jump on the bottom groove and got in front of Beaulieu, the two raced away from the pack and put on a good race for the lead as they muscled their cars around the tough track.  Coming from the rear was Matt Bourgoine and John Peters, using the bottom groove to pick off cars one at a time.  The race ran caution free, as Ryan Hammar went to Victory Lane!  Beaulieu finished second while Bob Weymouth finished third.  Bourgoine and Alan Smith rounded out the top five.

The two drivers at the top of the point standings took the wins over the weekend, and now it’s just a two point separation between leader Ryan Hammar and Matt Bourgoine.  This weekend, the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour returns to Wiscasset Speedway.  Racing starts at 6PM and tickets are just $5!
