Kevin Girard Jr. Wins Thursday Thunder Round #7; Extends Championship Lead
July 23, 2015
Scarborough, ME – After a race to forget for many of the teams last week, competitors rolled into the pit area of the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway with a renewed sense of focus to finish out the final few weeks of the 2015 Thursday Thunder season on a positive note. A scheduled 25 lap main event was on tap for the best legends drivers Northern New England has to offer!
24 year-old rookie competitor Colby Meserve in the 92 paced the field to the green flag, with the 84 of 21 year-old Matt Grant to his outside. Right off the get-go, Grant powered around the outside of Meserve to take over the lead off turn 2, and began to distance himself from the rest of the field in the Gore Moving & Storage coupe. While Grant led, plenty of jockeying for position took place all over the track, as some of the faster drivers attempted to make their way to the front. The packed grandstands saw a good, clean race, until first caution flew on lap 15, when last week’s third place finisher, Mike Humphrey in the Puzzled Racing 72, went for a solo spin in turn 4. The field bunched up for a restart, giving Grant some company, all of whom were hungry to take over the lead. Bob Weymouth in the 399 joined Grant on the front row to resume the action again. Some confusion ensued right away, as the green flag was displayed, along with the yellow caution lights, causing several drivers to hesitate and surrender some positions. The speedway decided to keep the race going green, and everyone continued without incident. Grant held on to the lead, but was challenged by the G.O. Motorsports 19 driven by Kevin Girard Jr. several laps later. Girard used the outside line to draw alongside the plain white 84 car, and pulled to the lead, after starting back in 15th place. Car 19 was on rails, as he distanced himself from the field, leaving Grant to fend off a swarm of cars, led by Joe Pastore in the 96. The closing laps of the race were as good as you could ask for, with tight battles going on for nearly every spot, bringing the crowd to their feet to cheer their drivers on! At the checkered flag, it was Kevin Girard Jr. cruising to his 3rd victory in Thursday Thunder competition, building his points lead to 52. Matt Grant held on to bring home the 84 in the 2nd spot after leading much of the race, Joe Pastore gave the Puzzled Racing entry a good run, landing his coupe in the podium for the second time this season, Bob Weymouth had to settle for 4th after losing several spots on the confusing exchange of the lap 15 restart, but still took top honors in the Masters division, and Tylar Braunschweig in the 70 quietly ran around the front of the field all night, giving the Wedgewood Motorsports team a strong 5th place finish.
